Arvind Kejriwal’s next target: Nitin Gadkari on Oct 16

NAGPUR: The suspense over India Against Corruption's next target ended on Friday. Reiterating that she has proof of her three meetings with BJP national president Nitin Gadkari, IAC activist Anjali Damania said she will be exposing his "lies" at a joint press conference with Arvind Kejriwal in New Delhi on October 16. While the news should come as a temporary breather for the Congress, it is bound to raise anxiety levels in the BJP.

If IAC's charges against Gadkari sticks, it will further fuel the Congress-BJP war of words. It could also dent the Nagpur politician's ambitions. He has given enough indications that he will contest elections for the first time in 2014. The BJP president has already been targeted in the Coalgate scam as some of his close associates have got undue benefits.

Damania had accused Gadkari of being hand-in-glove with former state deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar in the massive irrigation scam in Maharashtra for which the BJP chief had sent her a legal notice. "I am prepared to meet him in court, there's no question of apologizing to him," she said. "Within hours of receiving the notice, I have replied to Gadkari," added Damania.

The IAC activist was ostensibly in the city to meet people to discuss plans for the proposed political party that Kejriwal wants to float for the 2014 elections. "I have collected evidence against Gadkari, which was another purpose of my visit to Nagpur," she said, adding there are "several people who want to take on the Congress and the BJP".

She said she had met Gadkari in Mumbai on August 14 through persons known to him. "Gadkari was probably not aware that I was an IAC activist and said that he has business associations with those in the ruling coalition and, therefore, was unable to help me. He also advised me to not to proceed with my fight against corruption," Damania alleged.

The IAC activist had gone to seek Gadkari's help to save 59 acres of land being acquired for an irrigation project. "Everybody knows about politician-contractor nexus in all irrigation projects and Gadkari has close links with Rajya Sabha MP Ajay Sancheti and Maharashtra legislative council MLC Mitesh Bhangdia, both of whom are irrigation contractors," she claimed.

Saying that she had not mentioned Gadkari by name in her first press conference in Mumbai, Damania said she had only referred to "three top opposition members". "But it was Gadkari who replied. I was shocked to see he was lying about our meeting," she said, adding that now the BJP chief is apprehensive of meeting her. "I had challenged Gadkari to meet me but has he failed to respond," she said.

She also flayed leader of opposition in Maharashtra assembly Eknath Khadse for his "immature" remarks ("I will drink the water used to wash Damania's feet if charges against Gadkari are proved"). "We also have enough material against Khadse, it will be revealed in due course," said Damania.

Damania claimed that Ajit Pawar had twisted and modified the rules to suit contractors in irrigation projects. "A majority of tenders were allotted to a particular group of contractors having strong political connections. Such illegal activities should immediately be stopped and they should be heavily penalized for substandard works," she said.

Claiming that she and her husband, against whom the state government has launched an enquiry, are being victimized, Damania said, "The politicians have only one agenda - to crush voices raised against them to save their own skins."

'Ex-President family and others got sugar mills'

IAC activist Anjali Damania dropped another bombshell alleging that there was a nexus in the allotment of sugar mills in Maharashtra as all of them were "granted during auction" to the kith and kin of top politicians, including former President Pratibha Patil.

"Not a single mill is awarded to a common man. All politicians, including those of union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar, former deputy CM Ajit Pawar, senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde and of course BJP chief Nitin Gadkari have got these mills," she alleged, without elaborating as she had to rush to catch a flight.

TOI's attempts to contact Patil's son Rajendra Shekhawat, a Congress MLA from Amravati, proved futile.

Google-owned Motorola withdraws patent lawsuit against Apple

WASHINGTON: Google subsidiary Motorola Mobility has dropped a complaint of patent infringement against Apple without explanation.

In a brief filing with the International Trade Commission on Monday, Motorola Mobility said it was dropping without prejudice a complaint that Apple had infringed on seven Motorola patents.

Apple did not return telephone calls seeking comment and Google said only: "As we have said many times before, we will continue to vigorously defend our partners".

Google and Apple have been locked in an international patent war since 2010, as Apple has sought to limit the growth of Google's Android system. The fight has embroiled Samsung , HTC and others that use Android.

Reuters reported in August that the two companies were in settlement talks. Google said in its filing, however, that "there are no agreements between Motorola and Apple, written or oral, express or implied, concerning the subject matter of this investigation."

The complaint can be re-submitted. Florian Mueller, who was first to report the withdrawal on his blog, said he believed that Google withdrew the complaint to prevent it from being consolidated with an earlier case, thus slowing that case down.

In that case, an ITC judge had said in a preliminary ruling that Apple infringed on a patent for eliminating noise and other interference during voice and data transmissions. A final decision is due next April.

"Maybe they ... wanted to maintain their chances of at least getting some win against Apple in the US in 2013," Muller said in an email interview.

The biggest victory in the smartphone patent war so far belongs to Apple. On August 24, a jury in a California federal court ordered Samsung to pay $1.05 billion in damages after finding that Samsung had copied critical features of the iPhone and iPad.

Samsung was the top-selling mobile-phone maker in the second quarter of 2012, with Apple in third place, according to data from Gartner.

Today the big G turns 14 – Happy Birthday Google

What would you do if your start-up was offered $100,000? You’d probably set up your company properly and get down to work, which is what Google’s Sergey Brin and Larry Page did 14 years ago today.

It was September 4 1998 when, after two years as a college project, Brin and Page founded what is now one of the world’s largest companies. Google start out as a project called BackRub which was originally designed to be franchised out to other companies but after rejections from industry giants like Yahoo! the Google guys set up on their own.

There are two stories about how Google got its name – officially the company says that Google was “a play on the word ‘googol,’ a mathematical term for the number represented by the numeral 1 followed by 100 zeros.” Although the oft suggest rumour is that when Google received its first investment the cheque was made out to “Google Inc” rather than “Googol Inc.” so they decided to create the company with the misspelled name.

David Cheriton’s $100,000 investment in Google back in 1998 is today worth more than $1 billion. According to Cheriton, speaking to Bloomberg, the reason he decided to invest came largely down to the young start-up’s promoters. Cheriton says that Brin and Page’s business knowledge, as much as their technical knowledge, led him to believe that they could build the company into a success.

Today, Google says it has spent over 1 million computing hours building its index (and counting).

Some 14 years on Google has created one of the largest websites in the world, two operating systems; one of the largest email applications; industry leading ad systems; a few social networks, some more successful than others, including YouTube – the world’s largest video sharing site. Not bad for a company that started in a garage.

Happy Birthday Google

YouTube blocked in Pakistan for not removing anti-Islam film

New Delhi: The Pakistan government has blocked popular video-sharing website YouTube for not removing a film made in the United States which mocks the Prophet Mohammad and has enraged the Islamic world. The website will remain suspended till the anti-Islam film, Innocence of Muslims, is removed.

"Blasphemous content will not be accepted at any cost," Prime Minister Raza Parvez Ashraf's office said in a statement.

Attempts to access YouTube met with a message saying the website had been classed as containing "indecent material" and was blocked on the orders of the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA).

According to a statement issued by the PTA, around 700 links of the anti-Islam film had already been blocked after several complaints were received. "Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has proactively blocked and vigorously preventing all access to anti-Islamic video placed on worldwide web via YouTube with the name of Innocence of Muslims," the statement said.

Rallies across Pakistan over the film intensified today, with thousands taking to the streets, burning US flags and an effigy of President Barack Obama.
About 800 people demonstrated in the north-western town of Warai, in Upper Dir district, setting fire to a magistrate's house and the local press club before a protester was killed in an exchange of gunfire with police.

Another demonstrator died after being shot in the head during clashes with police near the US consulate in Karachi on Sunday.

Outlook apologises to M.K. Venu for Radia tapes cover image

Financial Express managing editor M.K. Venu has withdrawn his criminal defamation case against Outlook after a settlement that included an apology from the magazine for putting his photo and name on its cover dealing with the 2G scam and the Niira Radia tapes.

“The cover image of THE 2G SCAM TAPES (November 29, 2010) mistakenly included a photograph of Financial Express managing editor M.K. Venu with a caption that read, ‘In The Ring’,” says the clarification posted on the Outlookwebsite. “This appeared to imply that he was part of a group that worked to perpetuate the then Telecom Minister A. Raja in power, resulting in the scam. This was not our intention and we regret the impression created.”

The November 29, 2010 issue of Outlook magazine carried extracts of several telephone conversations that lobbyist Niira Radia had had with several newspaper editors, among them M.K. Venu. However, in none of Mr. Venu’s conversations with Ms. Radia was he heard discussing the telecom or spectrum issue.

Outlook's clarification continues: “We are happy to draw our readers’ attention to M.K. Venu’s consistent criticism of Raja’s Telecom Policy in his various published articles since 2007. Readers will bear in mind the foregoing clarification when viewing the November 29, 2010, cover page and cover story of Outlook.” It added that technical limitations prevented the clarification accompanying every online reproduction of the story. “In view of a resolution of the matter and issuance of this clarification, M.K. Venu has withdrawn the litigation filed against Outlook,” it says.

The case, being heard in a Delhi court, ended on Friday.
