Basics explained: What exactly is FDI?

What is FDI?

Foreign direct investment is relevant when a company makes an investment by buying another company or diversifies business in a nation other than in which it is based. The investment made through FDI becomes a source of external finance which could strengthen the economy.

How do companies benefit?

Some of the advantages for companies who choose to invest in other countries are tax exemptions, lower cost of working capital, access to foreign markets and expansion of business.

What is the difference between a franchise (eg: Dominos, Pizza Hut) and an FDI module?

Many companies have established their franchised business in India so how is the FDI module different?

In a franchising arrangement, the franchisor usually does not make any contribution to the business in terms of equity. According to Franchise India, the franchisors contribution is in terms of grant of rights for the use of their intellectual property and business method. The equity is contributed by the Indian franchisee and the economic interest of the franchisor is limited to the franchisee fees that he receives from the franchisee. Whereas an FDI occurs when an investor, based in one country (the home country), acquires some asset in another country (the host country) with intent to manage the asset.

Some arguments in favour of FDI:
  • FDI will generate employment in the country it invests
  • It could benefit farmers by eliminating middlemen
  • FDI gives consumers a wide variety of products to choose from at reasonable prices
  • It can improve food distribution systems
  • FDI can bring in better quality and standard products
  • FDI can increase the standard of living through its goods and services
  • It could raise the bar among other domestic companies in the same sector
  • It contributes to the health of the economy
Some arguments against FDI:
  • Allowing foreign players could destroy the livelihoods of millions of small store owners
  • Market prices could be manipulated by foreign retail giants
  • Local jobs could be at threat since the foreign players could purchase many products from abroad
  • There is no established correlation between advent of FDI and improvement of a country’s infrastructure

Now, send free texts from Facebook to cellphones

Social networking website Facebook has launched a new application that will enable users to send messages to anyone on their phone contact list in India — for free. This will help cut SMS cost for those with an internet connection on their phones. Facebook has partnered with major telecom operators and device manufacturers for the service, which will help more than 60 million users in India.

Facebook’s offering comes after Google introduced a free messaging service in India in October. Given the social networking website’s popularity in the country, the move may boost demand for internet data plans among youth.

“Users can sign up for a messenger account with their name and phone number, and send messages to their phone contacts instantly,” Facebook said in a statement.

The recipients need not necessarily have the app on their mobiles, but if they reply via SMS, standard rates will apply.

Bihar village bans mobile phone use by women

PATNA, India - (Reuters) - A village council in Bihar has banned the use of mobile phones by women, saying the phones were "debasing the social atmosphere" by leading to elopements - a move that set off outraged protests from activists.

In addition to the ban, the Sunderbari village council in a Muslim-dominated area some 385 kilometers east of Bihar capital Patna has also imposed a fine of 10,000 rupees if a girl is caught using a mobile phone on the streets.

Married women would have to pay 2,000 rupees. "It always gives us a lot of embarrassment when someone asks who has eloped this time," said Manuwar Alam, who heads a newly-formed committee tasked with enforcing the ban, referring to queries from neighbouring villages.

He said the number of elopements and extramarital love affairs had risen in the past few months, with at least six girls and women fleeing their homes.

"Even married women were deserting their husbands to elope with lovers. That was shameful for us," Alam said. "So, we decided to tackle it firmly. Mobile phones are debasing the social atmosphere".

Local officials have begun investigations, saying that such bans cannot be allowed in a healthy society, while women's rights activists called it an assault on freedom that could potentially end up harming women by stripping them of one source of protection from trouble, such as unwanted advances by men.

Girls and women are capable enough to protect themselves," said activist Suman Lal during a debate on local television. "Technology is meant to be used, not to be banned...The order is nauseating."

Fellow activist Mohammad Islam said it was "disappointing" that the village council ignored the many advantages of mobile phones before placing a ban on them for one reason.

"I want every girl to be given a mobile phone so that she could call up family members if she has a problem", he said.

Windows 8 is fourth most popular OS on Stream

Windows 8 is the fourth-ranked operating system (OS) on the latest Steam hardware and software survey. The results for November showed that 4.25 percent of Steam users were running the 64-bit version of Windows 8.

This puts the OS, which was officially available from October 26, marginally behind the 64-bit version of Windows Vista. Gamers are known to be early adopters, so it's probably not too surprising that a good number of users have upgraded to Windows 8. This figure also surpasses all versions of Mac OS, while Windows 7 remains the most popular operating system on 72 percent of systems.

Trying to decipher the actual impact of Windows 8 can be as difficult as reading tea leaves. While Microsoft recently disclosed that it has sold 40 million licenses, there are no further details on the breakdown between enterprise and consumer sales. Analysts, however, have appeared less than optimistic about Windows 8 sales.

One has to wonder if Windows 8's Steam statistics would have been greater had Steam boss Gabe Newell not been so vocal about his opposition to the OS. His opinion could be colored by the fact that the integrated app store on Windows 8 is a possible competitor to Steam.

Valve has recently moved to expand its online marketplace to selling non-gaming software. It also plans to launch a Linux version of Steam. The company today officially launched a new TV-friendly interface for Steam--Big Picture--which would bring the platform into the living room. The launch is accompanied by a sale of games designed to work with controllers, as they would be perfect when played in Big Picture mode.

Power generation hit by technical snags

HYDERABAD: Repeated breakdowns of thermal power plants due to technical snags are skewing the power supply position across the state.

As much as 1100 MW of thermal power generation has been lost due to these break downs on Wednesday after five thermal plants reported technical snags. According to APGenco sources, the snags are occurring because the annual shutdown and capital maintenance has not happened as yet.

The delay in carrying out the annual shutdown in thermal power plants is because of soaring electricity demand and lower output from hydropower plants, hit by weak rainfall during the monsoon season. It is this that is triggering breakdowns in the coal-fired generation units, they added.

At present, Vijayawada thermal station unit 1 and 6, Kothagudem thermal station unit 5 and 6 and Kakatiya thermal plant near Warangal have shut down causing a shortage of 1100 MW every day. It would take at least one week for all the units to resume functioning. In particular, the 500 MW Kakatiya thermal plant near Warangal and 6 and 7 units at Vijayawada thermal station are reporting high number of technical snags even after stabilization forcing the state to resort to the Srisailam hydel power during peak hours.

However, the hydel units are not of much help as several hydel power stations too have become inoperational due to precarious water levels in the reservoirs. The deficient monsoon rainfall has hurt hydropower generation in the state significantly, putting more pressure on thermal power generators as demand for electricity rises from consumers for cooling needs and farmers for irrigation using electric pumps.

The state government had asked the state-owned APGenco, country's third biggest power generator, to keep its plants running due to huge shortfall in hydel power generation during rainy season. According to senior officials of AP Genco, the risk of a breakdown is always there if repair and maintenance doesn't take place and every year some units at a project would have to go for capital maintenance like replacement of worn out equipment.

The state has five thermal stations producing 5,092 MW power at 23 units of various generation capacities. APGenco is the third largest power generating and the second highest hydro power generating utility in the country. It has achieved highest total energy generation and highest thermal power generation in 2008-09, first time since its inception. The plant load factor was 86.7% against the all India average of 77.2%.The hydro-power generation was 85% of available capacity.

Our spin problems technical, not mental: Alastair Cook

AHMEDABAD: "Spend time in the middle" . "Have belief in your ability." "Trust your method." Playing spin is as much mental skill as technical , the experts said as the England batsmen struggled to cope with India's spinners. But England captain Alastair Cook explained the chicken and egg situation crisply.

"There is always a technical issue before the mental issue kicks in," he said on England's problems against spin. "It could mean that when a batsman is not technically well-equipped to play spin, in trying to win the initiative, he doesn't play the ball on merit. He plays either over-aggressively or over-defensively to a ball which he could have dealt well even with his technical shortcoming. And if the batsman is not lucky, he loses his wicket in the process," Cook said, adding: "We were prepared for it. We just didn't deliver out in the middle. It's a question of getting our methods out in the middle and trusting them."

But 'methods' change from batsman to batsman. Former India captainRahul Dravid told a website: "I thought England didn't have the patience or they did not back their defence enough in the first innings . It almost felt some of the batsmen felt attack was the best mode to deal with things. You have to spend time in the middle. You have to force the bowlers to bring in variations which can lead to bad balls. Then you can score off them. You have to use your crease like Cook did."

On what India's spinners did right, Dravid said, "Dhoni gave a harder ball to spinners. Indian spinners overspin a ball a lot more than, say, a Graeme Swann does."

Kasab hanged!

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected the plea of Mohamad Ajmal Amir Kasab in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks case and upheld the sentence of death penalty awarded by the Bombay high court.

Kasab and his nine fellow jihadis had attacked CST railway station, Cama Hospital, Vinoli Chaupati junction, Oberoi Hotel, Taj Hotel, Nariman House and Leopold cafe in Mumbai on November 26, 2008 resulting in killing of 166 people and injuring 238 others.

A two-judge bench of the apex court pronounced the judgement at 10.30am. The bench held him guilty, first and foremost, of waging war against the country in the Mumbai terror attack case and said it was left with no option but to uphold the death sentence.

A bench of justices Aftab Alam and C K Prasad dismissed 25-year-old Kasab's plea against his conviction and death sentence confirmed by the Bombay high court, saying he was given free and fair trial in the case.

"Kasab's confessional statement was very much voluntary except a very small portion," the bench held.

It also dismissed Kasab's contention that the trial was not fair because the government did not provide him advocate during the time when he was arrested and put on trial.

"If lawyers are not provided at the commencement of trial, then the trial is vitiated. But the trial is not vitiated if a lawyer is not provided at pre-trial stage," the bench said.

The apex court said the trial court had made repeated attempts o provide Kasab with a lawyer but he had spurned the offer initially and said he did not want to accept Indian lawyers.

The judges said that in the totality of facts, evidences and circumstances the court had no option but to impose death sentence on Kasab.

The bench also observed that going by the evidence, it was clear that the conspiracy and planning of the 26/11 attack was hatched in Pakistan.

"We are more than certain that conspiracy was hatched in Pakistan," the bench said.

Senior advocate Raju Ramachandran, who defended Kasab in the apex court as amicus curiae, said he "bows down" to the apex court verdict, which upheld his death sentence.

"I bow to the verdict of the court.... I took it (the opportunity to defend Kasab) as a sacred duty and I performed it to the best of my ability," said Ramachandran, who was appointed amicus by the apex court.

Former Solicitor General Gopal Subramaniam, who had appeared for the Maharashtra government, also welcomed the verdict saying it is "a victory of justice and the Constitution of the country."
