PM’s address at the function organized by Rickshaw Sangh in Varanasi

I've lost my innocence, says 'clock-maker' Ahmed

14-year-old Ahmed Mohamed. (AFP photo)

Full marks for enterprise.

Full marks for initiative.

But Ahmed Mohamed's "reward" for bringing a homemade clock to school was to be placed in handcuffs, dispatched to a juvenile detention centre and have it made clear to him that the ticking device might be something more sinister.

It was suggested he was carrying a bomb and police reportedly told him he might be charged with making a hoax explosive device.

"I've lost my innocence. I can never look at the world in the same way," the teenager — currently suspended from school, said. "I like science, but I look like a threat because of my brown skin." He said when he showed it to his engineering teacher at MacArthur High School in Irving, Texas, he was advised not to show it to anyone else. "He told me it looked like a bomb."

The youngster ignored the teacher's warning and showed it to another teacher. "She said it looked a bomb, and called the police." The teenager said he was taken away in handcuffs. "They took me there without my parents. They made me feel like a criminal," he said.

The boy's father, Mohamed Elhassan Mohamed, said he learned of the controversy when he received a call from the Irving Police saying "my son had been arrested for making a bomb".

"I think it is because of Islamophobia and the [impact] of 911." Asked if he believed his son would have been detained for the clock had he not been Muslim, he said: "No".

Can’t force meat ban down someone’s throat, says Supreme Court

Prohibitions like meat ban in Maharashtra have to take into account the sensibilities of people involved and should be done in the spirit of tolerance and accommodation, court said.

The bench emphasised that the compassion for living creatures doesn’t have to be only on a few days but it should be for the entire year.

Sending a strong message amidst concerns over mounting curbs on individual liberties, the Supreme Court on Thursday said that “a ban cannot be forced down somebody’s throat” and that the “spirit of tolerance” was paramount.

Declining to approve a temporary ban on sale of meat in Mumbai in deference to the Jain festival of ‘Paryushana’, the top court asserted that every order of prohibition has to honour the spirit of tolerance and take into account the sensibilities of people.

PM Modi to visit Varanasi today; launch schemes, meet agitating contract teachers

Zee Media Bureau

Varanasi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit his Lok Sabha constituency for the third time on Thursday where he will launch several schemes and meet agitating contractual teachers.

Modi, who will be on a day-long visit, will also distribute cycle rickshaws and e-rickshaws to more than 600 people under the "Jan Dhan Yojana" scheme.

The SP government, however, voiced its objections prior to the visit to distribution of cycle-rickshaws, saying such a move will promote the "inhuman practice" of pulling it. It demanded that Modi cancel the decision to distribute cycle-rickshaws.

Panchjanya is utterly misguided about English and Hindi

Panchjanya, the RSS foghorn, recently published an editorial titled “Bharat ki taakat hai Hindi”—“Hindi is India’s Strength”. This had me scratching my Tamilian head (a space where Hindi cohabits with English, Tamil, Urdu, Spanish and a smattering of Punjabi and Portuguese). India’s strength…really?

This Train Station In Kerala Uses Flowers Grown In Recycled Plastic Bottles To Help Prevent Accidents

Aluva is a quaint little town in the Ernakulam district of Kerala, but it's now known for something you wouldn't visualise on an Indian train station.
Neha Venkatesh was transiting through the station when she noticed plastic bottles painted yellow and white with China Rose flowers growing out of them.

She later found out that it was the efforts of the Station Master and the Health Inspector whose plan was threefold: to recycle plastic bottles thrown out of train compartments, to beautify the station and to discourage people from crossing over the tracks.
