EU Film Festival to start in city from tomorrow



Kolkata,  The European Union (EU) Film Festival will begin here tomorrow with a screening of German film 'Jack'.

Organized by the Delegation of the European Union and embassies of EU Member States, the festival is being held in partnership with Federation of Film Societies of India, Cine Central, West Bengal Film Centre 'Nandan' and British Council, a Federation of Film Societies release said.

The Festival will be inaugurated at state film complex Nandan by noted film maker Buddhadeb Dasgupta, in presence of Chief Guest and West Bengal Information Techonology minister Bratya Basu, former Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court Justice Shyamal Kumar Sen and other dignitaries.

The European Union Film Festival will be hosted in Kolkata across two venues - Nandan and British Council, till July 2.

The festival will feature 24 acclaimed and award winning European films from Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.

This year the festival will screen movies from varied genres.

The inaugural film 'Jack' tells the story of a ten year old abandoned boy who picks up his six-year- old brother and finds his way to life on his own.

At the end of the film, he holds up a mirror to the audience.

The film directed by Edward Berger in 2014 has won international awards including the Silver Award for Best film in LOLA 2015 (Deutscher Filmpreis 2015).

The festival, currently running in Delhi, Chennai, Chandigarh, Mumbai, Bangalore, will traverse further through Kolkata, Hyderabad, Coimbatore, Ahmedabad, Pune, and Jodhpur till August 14, 2016.
