Raipur, Jan 10 (PTI) Four Naxals, including a woman, and a police jawan were today killed in a fierce gun battle between the ultras and security personnel in Chhattisgarh's insurgency-hit Narayanpur district, police said.

The skirmish took place in a forest under Chhotedongar police station limits when a joint team of security forces was on a counter-insurgency operation, Narayanpur Additional Superintendent of Police Anil Soni told PTI.

Mumbai, Jan 9 (PTI) Nickle, tin, lead, zinc and select brass utensils scrap rebounded at the non-ferrous metal market here today on stockists buying amid fresh demand from industrial users.

Nickel climbed by Rs 10 per kg to Rs 800 from last Friday's closing level of Rs 790.

Tin rose by Rs 5 per kg to Rs 1,570 from Rs 1,565.

Lead moved up by Rs 2 per kg to Rs 138 from Rs 136.

Bhubaneswar, Jan 9 (PTI) Expressing concern over acquisition of land for development projects without paying adequate compensation, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) today said the Odisha government required to make efforts for improvement of health, education and the socio-economic situation, particularly in the KBK region.

"The commission notes with concern several instances from within the state of acquisition of land for various development projects without adequate compensation or alternative livelihood support to those displaced from their land," NHRC Chairperson Justice HL Dattu said while inaugurating a three-day camp court of the commission here.

New Delhi, Jan 9 (PTI) The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will conduct annual examinations of Class X and Class XII exams from March 9, a day after the last phase of polling in the upcoming assembly elections in five states.

The CBSE class X examinations, in which 16,67,573 students are expected to appear, would end on April 10.

New Delhi, Jan 9 (PTI) Delhi-based writer and artist Kota Neelima said the absence of any concrete structure of worship in Ayodhya makes it a place for all, no longer confining it to a particular faith.

"Let me set the record straight that HCA has never ever shown reluctance to host the Test. We are issuing tender notice for in stadia advertisement today. Also we are set to sign a deal with TCM (Twenty First Century Media) within a day or two. I don't know who spread all these rumours," HCA Secretary Manoj told PTI.

Sensex gains 24 points on positive Asian cues

Mumbai, Jan 9 (PTI) The benchmark BSE Sensex rose around 24 points in opening trade today as investors made selective buying in blue chip stocks amid a better trend in other Asian bourses.

The 30-share index, which had lost 119.01 points in the previous session, recovered 23.86 points, or 0.09 per cent, to 26,783.09, with metal, capital goods, FMCG, PSU, banking and oil&gas stocks leading the recovery.

The NSE Nifty also rose by 19.20 points, or 0.23 per cent, at 8,263.

Police seize 65 litres of liqour; 8 arrested

Varanasi, Jan 8 (PTI) Eight persons were today arrested and 65 litres of illicit liquor was seized during different raids conducted at various places across the city, police said.

Police conducted raids in Nagwa area in Lanka police station area and arrested one person identified as Ashok Kumar with nearly 20 litres of illegal liquor here, said police.

Petrol pumps defer decision to not accept card payments

New Delhi, Jan 8 (PTI) Petrol pump owners tonight deferred till January 13 their decision to not accept credit and debit card payments for fuel sales after banks put off the move to levy the transaction (MDR) charge.

To promote cash-less transactions, the government had waived the Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) on fuel purchase post demonetisation for consumers. But after the expiry of the 50-day window, the banks have decided to levy MDR on petrol pump owners.

DMRC hopes JICA support will continue for Phase IV

New Delhi, Jan 8 (PTI) DMRC is keen on extending its cooperation with Japanese government funding agency JICA for its Phase IV expansion, under which six new corridors spanning around 103 km will be built at a cost of around Rs 50,000 crore.
