On Day 6 Of Darjeeling Bandh, Fresh Clashes Break Out, Army Called In

The police are on high alert and security forces are conducting route marches in various parts of the hills.

DARJEELING: Fresh clashes erupted today in Darjeeling after the son of a lawmaker was arrested and a senior Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) leader's house was allegedly vandalised last night. A public works department office in Bijonbari was reportedly set on fire by GJM supporters at 1 am.

GJM supporters threw stones, bottles at security forces prompting them to lathicharge and use teargas shells. The Naari Morcha of the GJM also protested against the raid and arrest. Both protesters and security personnel were injured in the clashes. A police vehicle was also set on fire by protesters.

The Army has been called in to control the situation. The police are on high alert and security forces are conducting route marches in various parts of the hills.

The Naari Morcha of the GJM also protested against the raid and arrest.
Vikram Rai, head of GJM's media cell and son of Morcha's Darjeeling lawmaker Amar Rai, was picked up from his home around midnight. Mr Rai clarifies his son has no political affiliations. Whereas GJM's assistant general secretary Binay Tamang alleged that his house was "raided and vandalised by the police and the Trinamool Congress cadres" at 3 am in the same manner as they had raided party chief Bimal Gurung's house in Darjeeling district two days ago.

"We are shocked that Vikram Rai, a local journalist, was arrested last night. Rai is associated with various media houses in Kolkata. If journalists are not safe in Darjeeling, who is," Mr Tamang said and added, "There is a virtual emergency imposed in Darjeeling region."

GJM supporters threw stones and petrol bombs at the home of Trinamool Congress activist Deoraj Gurung on Lebong Cart Road and attempted to set the house on fire, claimed Mr Gurung.

The ongoing agitation has crippled tourism.
The indefinite bandh called by the GJM in Darjeeling, which entered the sixth day, has paralysed the hills. According to a railway official, the iconic toy train service of Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) has been suspended. Markets, shops, hotels and other business establishments, barring pharmacies, have remained closed.

The GJM announced an indefinite general strike from Monday in the hills encompassing Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts and the Dooars (foothills of the Himalayas covering stretches of Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar district) protesting against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's decision to make Bengali language compulsory in state-run schools, but it has now escalated to the decades-old demand for a separate state of Gorkhaland.

The strike was called even as the Chief Minister assured that the new rule would not be imposed in the hill districts.

Regular night shifts can make you less fertile!

Irregular working hours can lessen your chances of fathering children.

Men, take note! Irregular working hours can dampen your sex drive and lessen your chances of fathering children.

Sleep loss has always been linked to various disorders, some of them being obesity and heart disease.

An average human being needs anywhere between seven to eight hours of sleep every night. In today's times, erratic working hours, unreasonable deadlines, and other factors have taken a toll on the amount of sleep and rest that a person gets.

According to Dr. Hrishikesh D Pai, Director IVF & Infertility at Fortis La Femme Hospital, Delhi & Secretary General of the Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecological Societies of India, men who do shift work are the worst victims.

The working pattern can affect the health of employees and impact their sleep pattern, meal times, and the ability to exercise.

Apart from this, lack of sleep is also associated with urinary problems and erectile dysfunction. The reason for this is that an erratic schedule can lower testosterone levels in men.

Testosterone is a hormone which helps fuel a man's sex drive. A reduction in the level of this hormone can result in the production of poor-quality semen, thereby making it difficult for men to help conceive babies.

Male fertility rates have already plummeted in the recent years due to poor diet and lifestyle as also 'gender-bending' chemicals present in the environment.

Too much or too little sleep can impact the body's circadian rhythm. The circadian rhythm controls the production of the sleep hormone melatonin and cortisol, which is a stress hormone.

Men who do shift work tend to constantly shift their circadian rhythm which results in the same type of 'jet lag' that one associates with traveling to and from different time zones.

The fluctuation in hormone levels can lead to a change in the expression of genes essential for producing sperm. Not just this, irregular sleep also increases the risk of insomnia or excessive sleepiness and causes a reduction in the total sleep time due to work schedule.

A lifestyle that involves irregular sleep patterns also contributes to blockages or obstructions in the tubes that take sperms away from the testes to the penis. This results in complete lack of sperm in the ejaculated semen.

Here are some tips for those working in night shifts

•Try to avoid working several night shifts in a row

•Avoid frequently rotating shifts

•Keep your workplace brightly lit to promote alertness

•Avoid bright lights on the way home from work if possible. This will make it easier for you to fall asleep once you hit the pillow

•Ask your family to limit phone calls and visitors during your sleep hours

•Use blackout blinds or heavy curtains to block out sunlight when you have to sleep during the day

•Try to avoid long commutes that take time away from sleeping

•Limit caffeine - you may have trouble falling asleep when you get home

•Stick to a regular sleep-wake schedule as much as you can

Technical advancements in the medical field have made procreation possible for men facing infertility issues. Some commonly known procedures available include Testicular Sperm Aspiration or TESA, Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration (PESA), Percutaneous Biopsy of the Testis (Perc Biopsy), and Microsurgical Epididymal Sperm Aspiration (MESA).

While modern medicines and techniques help address and resolve this issue, it is important to first bring about health changes in one's lifestyle including adopting good eating habits, following a proper sleep routine and engaging physical activities.

Having said this, sperm formation takes almost three months and therefore, along with a change in lifestyle what is needed is giving the changes adequate time to reap results.

Farmer Protests Flare Up, Several States Hit: 10 Points

NEW DELHI: Farmers across three states held protests today demanding loan waivers, a higher support price for their crops and implementation of other recommendations made by the Swaminathan Commission, which had been focusing on the reasons for farmers' distress. For several hours in Haryana, farmer unions blocked highways. In Madhya Pradesh, where six farmers died in police firing in Mandsaur on June 6, farmers demanded action against the officers responsible. Over the last week, eight farmers have committed suicide in the state. Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra -- states which have announced loan waivers for framers -- have also witnessed suicides by several farmers recently.

Here are the 10 developments of the story:

  1. A group of around 200 farmers blocked a stretch of national highway from Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh to Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh as part of a nationwide chakka jam (vehicle strike)
  2. In Haryana, farmers led by Bharatiya Kisan Union leader Gurnam Singh blocked the highway near Mohra in Ambala. Farmers also held protests at Rohtak, Sonepat, Hisar, Sirsa, Jind, Bhiwani and Charkhi Dadri.
  3. Despite the Yogi Adityanath government waiving loans to the tune of Rs. 35,000 crores in April, farmers alleged the government has discriminated between small farmers and ones owing bigger tracts of land.
  4. Activists say the main reason for the farmer distress is high cost of seeds, insecticides, diesel prices and low prices for produce.
  5. The National Commission on Farmers, headed by eminent agricultural scientist MS Swaminathan, submitted five reports between December 2004 and October 2006. The commission said, "The Minimum Support Price should be at least 50 per cent more than the weighted average cost of production."
  6. The opposition parties, including the Congress and the Indian National Lok Dal, have lent their support to the farmers. The Congress organised a Kisan Panchayat in Kurukshetra.
  7. Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia is sitting on a 72-hour "satyagraha"' since Wednesday in support of farmers. He says if BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra can announce farm loan waivers, Madhya Pradesh, which is also ruled by the same party should be able to do it.
  8. On Thursday, the Bhartiya Kisan Sangh -- a farmer body backed by the BJP's ideological mentor Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, held indefinite protests across Rajasthan. Loan waiver topped their list of demands. The protest was triggered by the state government's refusal to buy mustard at a minimum support price. Prices of mustard in Rajasthan, the country's largest producer, plunged after a bumper crop.
  9. Four states have waived loans for farmers -- Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
  10. The Reserve Bank has frowned on the practice of loan waivers. Its governor Urjit Patel said it could dissipate the fiscal gains made by states over the last few years and asked the state governments to "tread very carefully". MS Swaminathan, too, in a series of tweets on Tuesday, said loan waivers don't provide "secure long-term credit system".

After petrol, diesel, CNG rates may change on daily basis as government mulls dynamic pricing for fuel: Report

After petrol and diesel its now time for CNG rates to change on a daily basis.

After petrol and diesel its now time for CNG rates to change on a daily basis. According to TV report, the government is mulling dynamic pricing for CNG as well. The prices of petrol and diesel are set to change on a daily basis across the entire country from 16 June. CNG is touted as a clean fuel and this is likely to boost the segment. On Wednesday, the simmering differences between the oil marketing companies (OMCs) and retail fuel outlet dealers came to an end with the intervention of petroleum minister Dharmendra Pradhan after which the proposed strike by the petrol pump owners was called off. After meeting with the two parties, Pradhan told media that the dealer associations have assured cooperation in the roll-out of the daily price revision of diesel and petrol prices starting June 16 pan-India as planned earlier. He further said that the oil marketing companies will put in all efforts to make all fuel outlets automated at the earliest.

120 homes destroyed: London fire tragedy reveals ugly flaws of regeneration

I grew up in social housing. It provided a stable and secure (albeit overcrowded and cold) home for my family, for life. As fire tore through Grenfell Tower, just 500 metres from where I was staying in London, I witnessed the complete and terrible destruction of 120 homes just like the one I grew up in. In the morning, I passed the police cordon and saw dozens of fire fighters standing in complete, abject shock. At least 12 lives were lost, and many more are still feared for.

Yet as the ashes settle, it is clear that the threat of ruin extends well beyond Grenfell Tower. Indeed, the policies which I argue have contributed to this disaster have been rolled out across social housing projects both in the UK, and across Europe. Earlier this year, not far from Grenfell, local residents in Westminster voted against any form of refit to their notoriously poorly-maintained Brunel Estate. And many residents across London fear the prospect of “urban regeneration”, seeing it as a type of social cleansing, shorthand for a modern form of slum clearance.

Stocks of over-leveraged firms tumbled on the bourses on Wednesday with investors spooked by the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) decision to allow a clutch of a companies to be liquidated, if no other solution is found. The RBI said on Tuesday it had identified 12 stressed accounts that banks must resolve with the help of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC). The accounts identified by the RBI are those to which lenders have an exposure of over Rs 5,000 crore and where more than 60% of the amount has been classified as non-performing. Merely referring the cases under IBC may not imply immediate liquidation, but if creditors are unable to come up with an alternative solution, a liquidation will take place. In addition, banks would need to come up with plans to resolve another set of stressed accounts in the next six months. The total quantum of non-performing assets (NPAs) is estimated at close to Rs 7.7 lakh crore, nudging 10% of total loans. The total quantum of impaired loans is estimated at Rs 12 lakh crore or nearly 15% of total loans.
