U.S.-backed Iraqi forces attacked Islamic State's remaining redoubt in Mosul's Old City on Friday, a day after formally declaring the end of the insurgents' self-declared caliphate and the capture of the historic mosque which symbolized their power.

Dozens of civilians fled in the direction of the Iraqi forces, mostly women and children, some wounded by insurgents fire, thirsty and tired.

Commanders of Iraq's CTS counter terrorism units cautioned that with the mostly non-Iraqi IS militants dug in among civilians and likely to fight to the death, the battle ahead was challenging.

PM Narendra Modi Holds Big Rajkot Road Show As BJP Accelerates Gujarat Campaign

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a two-day visit to Gujarat, his home state.
RAJKOT, GUJARAT: A road show in Rajkot on Thursday was the highlight of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's two-day visit to Gujarat, designed to reach out to farmers, and, ahead of assembly elections, shore up the BJP's position with the powerful Patel community that has traditionally voted for the party, but has been upset for the last few years over their demand for reservation in government colleges and jobs not being met.

On Thursday evening, PM Modi inaugurated the Sauni Yojna, a project which will fill the Aji dam near Rajkot with Narmada waters before the road show over eight kilometers in the heart of the city. Posters and banners highlighting central and state government projects and huge cutouts of PM Modi lined the route. Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who is an MLA from Rajkot, had called for a "Diwali-like celebration" to welcome the Prime Minister.

Donald Trump’s State Department Is Acknowledging the Virtual Impotence of His Muslim Ban

In response to the Supreme Court’s ruling earlier this week, Donald Trump’s State Department sent a cable to the United States’ diplomatic posts explaining how officials should implement the president’s Muslim travel ban. The administration’s new guidance pushes the court-sanctioned implementation to be as restrictive as possible. It was also issued in secret, which means the administration is doing its damnedest to prevent the legal challenges that will surely follow. The guidance makes clear, though, that this version of the travel ban will not affect nearly as many of people as the original ban did, nor will it be as severe as the second version of the ban would have been had the court allowed it to go into full effect.
On Monday, the Supreme Court limited the ban to individuals who do not have a connection to a U.S. entity or a “close familial relationship” with a person in the United States. That vague description—the court cited only the example of a relationship with a mother-in-law and spouse—allowed the State Department to craft its own rules. What they came up with is the most limited plausible definition that falls within those boundaries. From the State Department’s guidance:

Ransomware Attack Sweeps Globe, Researchers See WannaCry Link

HIGHLIGHTS

  1. Another major cyber-attack 'Petya' hit global companies on Tuesday
  2. Researchers say Petya may be closely linked to WannaCry ransomware
  3. The ransomware virus includes code known as "Eternal Blue"
A major global cyber-attack disrupted computers at Russia's biggest oil company, Ukrainian banks and multinational firms with a virus similar to the ransomware that infected more than 300,000 computers last month.
The rapidly spreading cyber extortion campaign, which began on Tuesday, underscored growing concerns that businesses have failed to secure their networks from increasingly aggressive hackers, who have shown they are capable of shutting down critical infrastructure and crippling corporate and government networks.

Businesses in the Asia-Pacific region reported some disruptions on Wednesday with the operations of several European companies hit, including India's largest container port, although the impact on companies and governments across the wider region appeared to be limited.

The ransomware virus includes code known as "Eternal Blue", which cyber-security experts widely believe was stolen from the US National Security Agency (NSA) and was also used in last month's ransomware attack, named "WannaCry".

"Cyber-attacks can simply destroy us," said Kevin Johnson, chief executive of cyber-security firm Secure Ideas. "Companies are just not doing what they are supposed to do to fix the problem."

The virus crippled computers running Microsoft Corp's Windows by encrypting hard drives and overwriting files, then demanded $300 (roughly Rs. 19,600) in Bitcoin payments to restore access. More than 30 victims paid into the bitcoin account associated with the attack, according to a public ledger of transactions listed on blockchain.info.
