The common man's central banker

Beside bringing central banking to India's drawing rooms, Raghuram Rajan also built the RBI's credibility when other global central banks were fighting to preserve theirs

The common man does not give much thought to the signature on the currency notes in his wallet. He couldn't care less about the existence of the central bank itself, as he has little context to it beyond the coins and the notes. So, barring a few people who have some interest in the economy, a large proportion of the country's population wouldn't be aware of the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) governor.

The number of employees who struck work in the State and neighbouring AP was put at 35,000

Government buses remained off the roads leaving commuters in the lurch and operations at several banks were impacted on Friday after a large section of the employees in Hyderabad and rest of Telangana joined the nationwide strike called by frontline trade unions.

Several industrial units in Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts remained closed, while some educational institutions functioned. Most of the shops and commercial establishments remained open.

In the banking sector alone, the number of employees who struck work in the State and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh was put at 35,000 by Bank Employees Federation of India general secretary (AP & TS) P. Venkataramaiah.

As many as 5,000 bank branches in both the States did not function, All India Bank Employees Association secretary B.S. Rambabu said, adding in some banks both employees and officers participated. Where officers reported for work, the branches were opened but no cash or cheque transaction was possible.

Work at public sector, cooperative and regional rural besides old generation private banks were impacted, while State Bank of India and private banks such as HDFC and ICICI functioned as usual, the leader said.

All India Andhra Bank Award Employees’ Union general secretary T. Ravindranath said around 10,000 employees and officers of Andhra Bank across the country struck work opposing the Central government’s move to privatise/disinvest in public sector units and encourage foreign direct investment in defence, railways, insurance, banks and retail. They also protested against the move aimed at consolidation and merger of banks and demanded stringent measures for recovery of Rs.13 lakh crore bad loans.

A joint release from RBI Employees Association secretary G.Kranti and Reserve Bank Workers Union chief secretary G.Jagdish said all their members took part in the strike.

Leader of a trade and industry body, who requested anonymity, said while exact details of the loss and number of workers who stayed away would be known on Saturday, initial reports point to 60 per cent of the industrial units in Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy remaining shut.

The superstar — the only Khan superstar to not be married with kids — has been dodging the marriage question for a long time now.

Finland Will Launch Basic Income Pilot Program

The concept of a “basic income” style welfare program has been talked about for years. There are a number of variations, but it’s based on a pretty simple concept–we can replace most of the current welfare benefits given by a country by instead guaranteeing everyone a set amount of money per month. If people want to work more to add on to it, they can, if they choose not to or are unable to, that is the money they live with. The concept of a basic income has received both criticism and praise from individuals on almost every part of the political spectrum. But as much as a basic income program has been talked about, no one has really given it a serious try, until now. Finland is launching an experiment to put the basic income program to a test.

Get Your Marriage on Track: Take Your Wedding Vows Aboard a Luxury Indian Train

Move over destination weddings – Wedding on Wheels is here! Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), a subsidiary of Indian Railways, has introduced a service that offers the ability to hold weddings aboard luxury trains.

As couples all over the world and especially in lavish wedding-obsessed India look for unique locations where they can take their marriage vows, IRCTC has jumped on to the bandwagon in order to add to the revenues of Indian Railways.
It will offer wedding experiences with five star facilities, decor and food aboard luxury or semi-luxury trains, while chugging around the Indian countryside.

IRCTC operates one of the most luxurious train in the world – the Maharaja Express, which offers an 8 day tour covering the palaces and forts of Delhi, Agra, Ranthambore, Jaipur, Bikaner, Jodhpur, Udaipur, and Balasinor.
But Indian Railways and several state tourism boards also run other luxury trains – such as Palace on Wheels, Deccan Odyssey, Golden Chariot, and Royal Rajasthan on Wheels – which will also be available to host weddings.

Couples and wedding planners will be able to customise different wedding packages on offer from IRCTC. They can choose luxury or semi-luxury coaches, travel circuits, food, number of guests, and decoration. Spas and saunas too will be available for the real luxury-seekers. Cost will depend on the facilities used.

“It’s similar to offering everything one could expect during a wedding held in a hotel, resort or farmhouse. There will be the best of everything, managed by experts to make it one of the most memorable events for the bride, groom and their families,” a Railways official told New Indian Express. “We are finalising the finer details and will launch these packages on demand. We are hoping it’s a huge success,” the official added.

IRCTC hopes to attract NRIs, foreigners and other couples looking for the quintessential Indian wedding experience to come aboard its Wedding on Wheels journey.

PlayStation Now Game Streaming for Windows PC Available Today

  • Last week Sony announced PlayStation Now was coming to Windows PC
  • The service is now available in select regions
  • You will need at least a 5Mbps Internet connection to use it
Much like most news in gaming these days, it was leakedthat PlayStation Now (PS Now) - Sony's Netflix-like streaming service would be making it to PC. This was followed up by an official announcement minus any concrete release information until now. Today PS Now is available on Windows PCs. The news comes via the official PlayStation Blog.

This means Windows PC owners can now play over 400 PS3 games without having to buy a PS3. Instead paying $19.99 a month or $44.99 for three months. At the moment Sony is also offering a year's worth of PS Now for $99.99. Keep in mind that you will need an Internet connection with at least 5Mbps to get the most of it. And it isn't available in regions like India either. For now it is limited to Europe and North America. In addition to this, new games have been added. These include Heavy Rain, Tomb Raider, and Mafia II.

If you're in the right region or have a good enough VPN and a fast enough Internet connection, this is what you'll need for PS Now:
  • OS: Windows 7 Service Pack 1, Windows 8.1, or Windows 10
  • CPU: Intel Core i3 3.5 GHz, AMD A10 3.8GHz or faster
  • HDD space: 300MB or more
  • RAM: 2GB or more
  • Sound card and a USB port
The addition of PC along with the PS3, PS4, PS Vita, and select smart TVs make PS Now a compelling alternative to backwards compatibility. With a large number of games available including newer fare like Proteus and Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments make it one of the more comprehensive ways to stream games if that's your method of choice.

While Sony has not announced plans to launch the service in markets like India, it has been rumoured that the company had been making enquiries into the feasibility of such an endeavour in the past. Needless to say, until the Internet infrastructure catches up, it's a far cry from reality.

Ranveer Singh and Ranbir Kapoor define self promotion in the most unique way possible

Ranveer Singh and Ranbir Kapoor both have developed this unique and apparently 'fashionable' way to promote themselves

You will be shocked to see what they do to prove their fondness for themselves

Ranveer Singh and Ranbir Kapoor are two of the most handsome hunks of Bollywood and they do not need to flaunt themselves. So when such top actors indulge in self promotion, we are a bit taken aback for obvious reasons. Celebs like Ranveer and Ranbirdo not need to tell us how famous they are coz that’s a known fact and there is no denial there. While we can understand if an actor promotes a brand that he endorses but promoting themselves becomes a bit odd, isn’it ?

Indian Railways Engineer Wins MIT Award for His Radical Caterpillar Train Idea

Ashwani Kumar Upadhyaya, a 47-year-old Indian Railways engineer, recently won an award for his innovative idea of developing caterpillar trains — a network of lightweight, elevated train coaches that will run at speeds up to 100 km/hr and will take passengers even to the residential areas. Ashwani, who is a 1997-batch officer of the Indian Railway Traffic Service, is posted at the Centre for Railway Information Systems in New Delhi and is currently on a study leave as a PhD scholar in Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston. He won in a global competition on innovations that was organised by MIT and had about 500 entries. Ashwani came up with this idea with a fellow PhD scholar Emil Jacob.
The caterpillar train is named so because the idea is to install wheels both above and below the coaches. This way, they will be able to run on the tracks as well as hang from them. The tracks would be supported by poles bent to form arches.

The whole system will run on electricity and the coaches will also have a backup battery to be used in case of emergencies such as a power failure. Every coach will have the capacity to seat 20 people and their small size will help them reach residential areas too. The small size is also supposed to allow trains to be vertically stacked at the depot.

The station for caterpillar trains will be a simple platform to be reached via elevators. A console on the train would allow passengers to pick stations. The most surprising thing about this radical urban transport system is that it would cost a fifteenth of the conventional metro rail system.

“Currently, all urban mass transit systems are developed on the hub-and-spoke concept — the transport system is the hub and users have to travel from various parts of the city and converge there to use it. But the C-Train goes wherever there is at least a five-metre road,” Ashwani told The Indian Express. The competition, organised by MIT’s Centre for Collective Intelligence, offers a crowd-sourcing platform for people to create ideas and proposals on how the issue of climate change can be addressed.

Ashwani now plans to educate eminent academicians and town planners about the benefits of the C-Train at an upcoming conference to be organised by MIT in September.

The deployment of the Mars 2020 rover will be the next step in their "Journey to Mars". Credit: NASA

NASA’s Mars Exploration Program has accomplished some truly spectacular things in the past few decades. Officially launched in 1992, this program has been focused on three major goals: characterizing the climate and geology of Mars, looking for signs of past life, and preparing the way for human crews to explore the planet.

And in the coming years, the Mars 2020 rover will be deployed to the Red Planet and become the latest in a long line of robotic rovers sent to the surface. In a recent press release, NASA announced that it has awarded the launch services contract for the mission to United Launch Alliance (ULA) – the makers of the Atlas V rocket.
